This poem was written in 2010 during my first stint in Bangalore.
The White One
I am drown in the life
of another place so strange and foreign.
A dance, I breathe between the shades
of white and brown.
Where there is no security in numbers
no comfort to be found.
I am on the outside – the Goree – the one to watch.
Constantly on display, performing.
This is a white woman.
This is how she looks.
This is how she talks, walks, laughs and smiles.
I am the one who cannot understand,
the world around me.
Everything is a mystery.
I am a sponge.
A dance I breathe.
Do you see me? The white one?
